WALESKA, Ga. – It was a tale of two games for Reinhardt baseball on Saturday afternoon at home, as the Eagles looked unstoppable in a 9-3 runaway in contest one before falling flat in the series finale in an 8-1 loss to the Rams of Columbia International (S.C.).
The hometown team is now 11-5 and 2-1 inside the Appalachian Athletic Conference after not being able to lock down the sweep.
"We did everything we needed to do this weekend until we didn't," head coach Jonathan Burton said. "Game three is becoming a problem and I don't have answers for that right now. This must be something our 16 seniors fix, because it's certainly not a lack of talent. You can't let these games slip if you want to win this league… It's that simple, when you win the first two, especially at home, you have to sweep."
Reinhardt pounded out 15 hits in the opener, including three in the bottom of the first inning on its way to a 4-0 lead after a pair of run-scoring singles, a sacrifice fly and a groundout. The game moved to a 5-0 score after Ben Heideman crossed home plate in the bottom of the fourth.
The two clubs would exchange runs in the fifth as the Rams got a SAC fly and RBI-single of their own, but gave the tallies right back on the same plays in the bottom of the frame as the scoreboard changed to 7-2.
A pinch-hit homer in the top of the seventh got Columbia International back within four tallies, but it was déjà vu all over again as the Eagles responded with another SAC fly. Andres Ugarte got his second RBI on the day in the bottom of the eighth inning to wrap up the scoring.
Heideman (3-for-4) was one of 10 players to register a hit for the Eagles in the positive outcome.
Nick Sanders also earned a pair of RBIs.
Daniel Dolensky got the win on the bump with six innings of work, six strikeouts and two runs allowed.
Reinhardt seemed to be starting right where it left off in the bottom of the first in game two by scoring a run on another Ugarte hit up the middle. The tide changed quickly, however, as the Rams rolled to a half-dozen runs on five hits in the second to take the lead for good.
The Eagles would be held in check the rest of the way offensively, while Columbia International added two more in the fifth frame just for good measure in the 8-1 win.
Ugarte was 2-for-3, and Albert Mora and Heideman notched their club's only other pair of knocks.
Nate Richardson got the loss after just two innings and six runs allowed.
No. 1 Tennessee Wesleyan is up next in a three-game home series beginning on Tuesday with a doubleheader at 2 p.m.
